Chicana/o Studies 54: Mexican American Arts in American Culture, Professor Angelita Rovero
Email: RoveroA@laccd.edu

This presentation of ofrendas (offerings to the deceased) was the central focus of our Chicana/o studies 54 course. In this course, students participated in a curriculum emphasizing independent research and the creative process in constructing Día de Los Muertos ofrendas. Themes presented in the ofrendas were drawn from selected course-related topics, which reflect various aspects of Mexican and Chicana/o culture from the pre-Cuauhtemoc period well into the present.

Students completed weekly tasks such as creating 4 tiers to represent the 4 elements, 4 page biography, hand made skull/skeleton, central picture, 6 additional pictures with descriptions, name display and hand made flowers.  Students then incorporated all of the course requirements into their own cultural ofrenda.

For their midterm exam, students had the option to pick a loved one that passed or a Chicana/o in the Arts. Students followed guidelines and weekly requirements along with a 4 page biography of the person they chose to honor in the creation of their ofrenda.  In this virtual exhibit, students submitted a 2-3 minute video each, to explain their ofrenda.  We hope you enjoy this virtual exhibit, all of our ELAC students’ creations are made with love and honor.
